My Chicks
By: Victor Honore

It started out as a pretty normal day at a New Jersey state fair. While taking a break with my friends we where talking about how we saw some chicks for sale and how sweet it would be to get some. We went back to look at them some more and noticed that you could buy 6 for 18 dollars. I boldly walked up to the man sitting at the desk and asked could I have some chickens please, he said "your not old enough son". My friends and I where very disappointed. But of course! Our counselor was 21 she could get some for us!

Back to camp we go with 6 little chicks for the last week of camp. At camp we decide to keep them in an empty horse stall in the barn which worked quite well. With a heating lamp we kept them there for a good week before I went back home. When my parents came to pick me up from camp we decided to bring 2 home. One of the other kids brought the other four home.

When I first brought them home the whole family was shocked and didn't know where to keep them. We kept them in a large cage at night so animals wouldn't eat them. I tried to build a coop for them but I failed, that's when I decided to go on line. Thankfully Henspa had exactly what I was looking for: an inexpensive coop for an urban home.

The package arrived and I started building right away. It took me a good hour and I was done, a new beautiful home for my chickens. The hens where very happy and have lived there for almost a month and are very healthy and happy. I take them out once in a while so they can explore the back yard. Chickens are very fun and cuddly pets they are extremely fun to watch run around and pet them. I would suggest to anyone that they are great pets.
